Install · v0.14.0

Install Alice.

One command on Linux, macOS or Windows. The installer checks the release SHA-256, installs the .NET 10 SDK per user if it is missing, and puts alice on your PATH.

One command

macOS / Linux

curl -fsSL https://alice-lang.org/install.sh | sh

Windows

irm https://alice-lang.org/install.ps1 | iex

From source

git clone https://github.com/alicelanguage/alice.gitcd alicedotnet build Alice.sln --configuration Releasedotnet run --project src/Alice.Cli -- run examples/basics/hello.al

The installer checks the release SHA-256, fetches the .NET 10 SDK if you need it, and needs no admin rights.

Your first five minutes

  1. Check the setup

Checks .NET, your PATH and the installed toolchains.

    alice doctor
  2. Try the REPL

Run alice with no arguments for an interactive session.

    alice
  3. Create and run a project

A project is a folder with alice.toml, src/ and test/. It also gets AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md for AI agents.

alice new app && cd app
    alice run
    alice test
  4. Add a NuGet package

Any .NET library works as is.

    alice add Newtonsoft.Json
  5. Set up your editor

The VS Code and Zed extensions use the built-in language server, alice lsp --stdio.

Versions and toolchains

Alice manages its own versions, like rustup: stable, nightly, or a release pinned per project.

  • alice toolchain install nightly installs the nightly build.
  • alice toolchain default 0.14.0 sets the default version.
  • alice toolchain pin 0.14.0 pins a version for the current project.
  • alice +nightly run app.al runs one command with another version.
  • alice self update updates the installation.

Release archives are available for Linux x64, Windows x64, macOS x64 and macOS arm64 on the releases page. More in the toolchains chapter.

No install needed

The playground compiles and runs Alice in your browser, and shows the C# and .NET bytecode it compiles to.
